Fire Department

The Ellinwood Fire Department is a volunteer department and provides fire and rescue for the City of Ellinwood and the Lakin and Comanche townships.  The Ellinwood Fire Department consists of volunteers who are on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  Chris Komarek is the Fire Chief and Spencer Proffitt is the Assistant Fire Chief.

Ellinwood’s ISO (Insurance Service Office) ranking was upgraded to a Class 3 and an 8B in rural areas within 5 road miles of the fire station.  This puts Ellinwood in the top 5% in the state.

Department training is held on the 2nd Monday of every month to keep the fire personnel up to date and familiar with the equipment.  Members are certified through the State of Kansas.

Department Goals

The primary goals of the Fire Department are to:

  • Reduce and prevent the loss of life and property damage
  • Quickly rescue trapped victims
  • Protect the environment from destruction
Educational Programs

The Ellinwood Fire Department provides a fire prevention program to all the Ellinwood schools during fire prevention week which is observed in the month of October.  The program consists of demonstrations, poster contest and a ride on the fire truck for kindergarten students.
